Past Perfect Continuous Tense
Introduction
The past perfect continuous is like the past perfect, but it emphasizes the duration and ongoing nature of an action that happened before another past event.
How to form it: You need three parts:
- "Had" (for all subjects)
- "Been"
- The main verb ending in -ing
For example: I had been studying, she had been working, they had been waiting
Key idea: We focus on how long an action was in progress before something else happened in the past.
When Do We Use It?
1. To Emphasize Duration Before a Past Event
When you want to show how long something had been happening before another action:

- Had you been waiting long before the taxi arrived?
- We had been trying to call you for an hour when you finally answered.
- It had been raining hard for several hours, and the roads were flooded.
- They had been studying English for three years before they moved to London.
2. To Show Cause and Effect
When the continuous past action caused a result:

- His clothes were dirty because he had been playing in the mud.
- I was hungry because I hadn't been eating properly.
- The ground was wet because it had been raining.
3. In Reported Speech
This tense is used when reporting what someone said (converting present perfect continuous or past continuous to past perfect continuous):
