Past Perfect Tense
Introduction
The past perfect helps us talk about which action came first when we're discussing two or more past events. Think of it as "the past of the past"!
How to form it: You need two parts:
- "Had" (for all subjects)
- The past participle of the main verb
For example: I had eaten, she had finished, they had seen
Key idea: It shows that one action was completed before another action in the past.
When Do We Use It?
The past perfect makes it clear that one event happened before another in the past. It doesn't matter which event you mention first – the tense shows which came first!
Understanding the Sequence of Events
Let's look at some examples where Event A happened first, and Event B happened later:
Examples
Example 1:
- Event A (earlier): John left the office
- Event B (later): I arrived
- Sentence: John had left the office when I arrived. ✅
Example 2:
- Event A (earlier): I saved my document
- Event B (later): The computer crashed
- Sentence: I had saved my document before the computer crashed. ✅
Example 3:
- Event A (earlier): We started cooking
- Event B (later): They arrived
- Sentence: When they arrived, we had already started cooking. ✅
Example 4:
- Event A (earlier): He didn't sleep well
- Event B (later - Result): He was very tired
- Sentence: He was very tired because he hadn't slept well. ✅
Using "Just" with Past Perfect
Use "just" with past perfect to show that the first event happened only a short time before the second event:
Examples
- The train had just left when I arrived at the station.
- She had just gone out when you called.
- I had just finished cooking when the guests arrived.
- They had just sat down when the phone rang.
How to Form Sentences
Affirmative (Positive) Sentences
- I had drunk... (I'd drunk...)
- You had drunk... (You'd drunk...)
- We had drunk... (We'd drunk...)
- They had drunk... (They'd drunk...)
- He had drunk... (He'd drunk...)
- She had drunk... (She'd drunk...)
- It had drunk... (It'd drunk...)
Note: "Had" is the same for all subjects!
Interrogative (Questions)
- Had I drunk...?
- Had you drunk...?
- Had we drunk...?
- Had they drunk...?
- Had he drunk...?
- Had she drunk...?
- Had it drunk...?
Negative Sentences
- I hadn't drunk... (I had not drunk... / I'd not drunk...)
- You hadn't drunk... (You had not drunk... / You'd not drunk...)
- We hadn't drunk... (We had not drunk... / We'd not drunk...)
- They hadn't drunk... (They had not drunk... / They'd not drunk...)
- He hadn't drunk... (He had not drunk... / He'd not drunk...)
- She hadn't drunk... (She had not drunk... / She'd not drunk...)
