Past Continuous Tense
Introduction
The past continuous (also called past progressive) helps us paint a picture of the past! It describes actions that were in progress (ongoing) at a specific moment in the past.
How to form it: You need two parts:
- The past tense of "to be" (was/were)
- The main verb ending in -ing
For example: I was eating, she was studying, they were playing
Key idea: The action began before a specific moment in the past and was still going on at that time.
When Do We Use It?
1. To Set the Scene in a Story
To describe the background or atmosphere in a story:
Examples
- The sun was shining and birds were singing as I walked to school. Children were playing in the playground, and the tea seller was preparing his stall. Everything was looking peaceful that morning.
2. For Interrupted Actions
When one action (ongoing) was interrupted by another action:
Examples
- I was having breakfast when the phone rang.
- They were waiting for the bus when the accident happened.
- She was cooking curry when her friend arrived.
- We were watching TV when the power went out.
Pattern: [Past Continuous] + when + [Simple Past]
3. For Two Simultaneous Actions
When two actions were happening at the same time:
Examples
- While I was studying, my brother was watching TV.
- She was cooking while he was cleaning the house.
- The children were playing outside while their parents were talking inside.
4. To Express a Change of Mind
Examples
- I was going to visit the beach, but it started raining.
- We were planning to have a party, but we decided to postpone it.
5. To Make Very Polite Requests (with "wonder")
Examples
- I was wondering if you could help me with my homework.
- We were wondering if you'd like to join us for dinner.
